What is Lumen Depreciation

Lumen depreciation is the gradual decrease in the amount of light emitted by a lamp or luminaire over time. It is a natural occurrence that happens to most lamps and is influenced by various factors such as lamp technology, operating conditions, and maintenance practices.

Unlike a lamp burning out, which results in a complete loss of light output, lumen depreciation occurs when the lamp gradually loses its lumen output due to repeated use. This decrease in light output can impact the performance and effectiveness of a lighting system, as the ability to provide sufficient illumination diminishes over time.

The rate of lumen depreciation can vary depending on the type of lamp. For example, incandescent lamps tend to have a relatively faster lumen depreciation compared to other lamp types. This is because the filament in incandescent lamps gradually wears out, resulting in a decrease in lumen output.

On the other hand, LED lamps, known for their energy efficiency and long lifespan, experience lumen depreciation at a much slower rate compared to traditional lamps. LED technology allows for better control over lumen maintenance, and high-quality LED lamps can maintain a significant portion of their initial lumen output even after thousands of hours of use.

By considering the rate of lumen depreciation, lighting professionals can anticipate the decrease in lumen output and plan for appropriate replacements or adjustments to ensure consistent and adequate lighting levels. This knowledge also helps in selecting the right lamp type for specific applications and optimizing the lifespan and performance of lighting systems.
