What is J-Box

A J-Box, also known as a junction box, is a type of enclosure used to house wiring connections. It is typically used at the end of a conduit run, where multiple wires or cables are joined together. The J-Box provides a safe and accessible location for making alterations, repairs, or additions to the wiring system.

In terms of design, a J-Box is often deeper than a standard octagonal junction box, allowing it to accommodate a driver and enabling the use of a thinner canopy for certain fixtures. It is typically made of die-stamped 16 gauge galvanized steel, which provides durability and protection for the wiring connections.

常見問題

Do You Need a Junction Box for Outside Light

You do not require a junction box for every outdoor light fixture. Incandescent and LED bulbs can be directly screwed into the power outlet without the need for a junction box. However, certain light fixtures, like those with metal halide bulbs, necessitate a junction box because of the high wattage of the bulbs.

Is It OK to Put a Junction Box in the Wall

It is not recommended to bury a junction box in the wall as it goes against building codes. This practice is not only unsafe but also inconvenient. If an electrician needs to access the junction box, they would have to cut a hole in the wall.

What Happens if You Don’t Ground a Junction Box

A junction box that is not properly grounded can result in electrical surges. This can be dangerous as it allows the electricity to flow freely, increasing the risk of electrocution or fire.

How High Does a Junction Box Need to Be

The recommended height for wall outlet boxes is typically around 12 inches from the top of the floor covering to the bottom of the receptacle box (or 16 inches to the top of the box).
