What is Insulated Ceiling (IC) Fixture

An insulated ceiling (IC) fixture is a type of recessed lighting fixture that is specifically designed for installation in areas where it will come into direct contact with insulation. The term “IC” stands for insulation contact, indicating that these fixtures are safe to be in direct contact with insulation without posing a fire hazard.

IC-rated fixtures have thermal protection mechanisms to prevent overheating and combustion, while non-IC-rated fixtures lack this protection and are not suitable for insulation contact. IC-rated fixtures are designed with a double can or housing, creating an air gap between the cans that serves as insulation for the outer can. This insulation helps to keep the outer can cooler, reducing the risk of combustion when it comes into direct contact with insulation materials in the ceiling.

In contrast, non-IC-rated fixtures are constructed with a single can design and typically have ventilation holes to allow heat to dissipate. These fixtures are suitable for use in areas where insulation is not necessary or present.

常見問題

How Do I Know if My Light Fixture Is IC Rated

Insulated Contact (IC) rated fixtures are known for their energy efficiency and safety. To determine if your recessed lighting is IC rated, you can check the Underwriters Laboratory sticker located inside the fixture. Look for the label that states either “IC Rated” or “Non-IC Rated.”

Can IC Rated Lights Be Covered With Insulation

IC-rated fixtures, also known as insulation contact rating fixtures, are specifically designed to be safely surrounded by insulation. However, it is important to note that in order to minimize the risk of fire, IC-rated recessed cans are only suitable for use with lower-wattage bulbs.

Does IC Mean Fire Rated

IC-rated fixtures are not inherently fire rated. While they are designed and tested for direct contact with insulation, they do not serve as effective flame barriers on their own. Most IC fixtures are constructed from light sheet metal or aluminum, which quickly deteriorates when exposed to fire.
