What is Medium Light

Medium light is a level of illumination that is not direct but still provides sufficient brightness for plant growth. It is the amount of light that plants receive when they are positioned at a moderate distance from a window, where they are not exposed to direct sunlight. Typically, medium light is measured within the range of 250 to 1000 foot-candles.

Plants that thrive in medium light conditions include Spathiphyllum (peace lily), African Violet, Begonias, Boston Fern, Croton, Dumb cane (Dieffenbachia), and Moth Orchid (Phalaenopsis). These plants have adapted to lower light levels and can flourish without the need for direct sunlight. Medium light is often found in rooms with east-, south-, and west-facing windows, depending on the proximity of the plants to the windows. For instance, in a room with an east-facing window, the medium light area would be closer to the window compared to a room with a south- or west-facing window.
