What is Nanometer (nm)

A nanometer (nm) is a unit of length in the metric system, equivalent to one billionth of a meter. It is commonly used to measure dimensions on an atomic scale and to specify the wavelength of electromagnetic radiation, particularly in the visible part of the spectrum. In the lighting industry, nanometers play a role in determining the specific wavelengths of light emitted by a light source, which can have varying effects on plant growth and development.

Horticultural growers can select the appropriate lighting system for their plants. Different wavelengths of light within the nanometer range have distinct impacts on photosynthesis and other physiological processes in plants. For instance, the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) range, which falls between 400 and 700 nanometers, is essential for optimal photosynthesis.
