What is Kilowatt (Kw)
A Kilowatt (kW) is a unit of measurement used to quantify the rate at which electrical power is consumed by lighting fixtures or devices. It represents 1000 watts of power. For example, if ten 100W light bulbs are turned on, the total energy usage would be 1kW. This indicates that each light bulb consumes 100W of power, and when multiplied by the number of bulbs, the total power consumption is calculated.
Furthermore, the term “kW” is also synonymous with “demand” when communicating with a utility company. It refers to the amount of power required by electrical devices at a specific moment. For instance, if ten light bulbs and a 3,000-watt clothes dryer are simultaneously turned on, the total demand or power required would be 4kW. This highlights the importance of the utility company being able to supply sufficient electricity to meet the power requirements of the connected devices.
