What is General Lighting Service (GLS)
GLS, short for General Lighting Service, describes a specific type of light bulb that is characterized by its classic pear-shaped design, which has been in use for over a century. It is one of the most recognized and widely used bulb shapes worldwide.
Originally, GLS bulbs were incandescent light bulbs that featured a visible filament. However, with advancements in technology, newer and more energy-efficient options have become available. This allows consumers to replace energy-consuming incandescent GLS bulbs with alternatives such as LED or fluorescent bulbs, resulting in significant energy savings.

Modern GLS bulbs are often made from heat-resistant thermal plastic or glass and can have an opaque finish with a “pearl” or “opal” appearance. They are typically fitted with either a B22 bayonet cap or an E27 Edison screw base, making them compatible with a variety of lighting fixtures.
The development of energy-saving GLS bulbs has enabled users to achieve the same look and feel of traditional incandescent GLS bulbs while reducing energy consumption. These bulbs provide a versatile lighting solution for both residential and commercial applications.
