What is Ingress Protection

In the lighting industry, “Ingress Protection” (IP) refers to a rating system that indicates the level of protection provided by a lighting fixture against solid objects and water. The IP rating consists of two digits, each representing a specific aspect of protection.

Doesn't find what you want? Don't worry. There are always alternate ways to solve your problems. Maybe one of our portfolios can help.

The first digit in the IP rating represents the level of protection against solid objects, such as dust, dirt, or other foreign bodies. It ranges from 0 to 6, with higher numbers indicating a higher level of protection. For example, an IP rating of 0 means no protection against solid objects, while an IP rating of 6 means complete protection against dust.

The second digit in the IP rating represents the level of protection against water. It ranges from 0 to 9, with higher numbers indicating a higher level of protection. For example, an IP rating of 0 means no protection against water, while an IP rating of 9 means protection against high-pressure water jets.

These IP ratings are crucial in determining the suitability of a lighting fixture for different environments. For outdoor applications, where exposure to harsh weather conditions is expected, fixtures with higher IP ratings, such as IP44 to IP68, are recommended. In wet areas like bathrooms or gardens, IP54 to IP65 ratings are suitable, depending on the positioning of the lights.

To determine the Ingress Protection of a lighting product, IP testing is conducted. This testing provides a standardized comparison of the level of protection offered by different enclosures. It is important to note that IP testing should always be performed at an accredited test laboratory.
