What is Adaptive Lighting

Adaptive lighting is a feature that allows lights to automatically adjust their color temperature throughout the day. This feature was first introduced alongside the iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 software updates by Apple’s HomeKit smart home software. With adaptive lighting, supported smart home lights can dynamically change their color temperature based on the time of day.

In the morning, when the lights are turned on, adaptive lighting selects warmer yellow tones to mimic the gentle glow of a sunrise, promoting relaxation and a peaceful start to the day. As the day progresses, the lights transition to cooler white lighting, resembling the brightness of daylight outdoors. This cooler white light is known to enhance alertness, focus, and productivity. In the evening, the lights shift back to warmer tones, creating a cozy and soothing atmosphere to help wind down and prepare for a restful night.

The purpose of adaptive lighting is to solve the color temperature problem by ensuring that the lighting in a space is appropriate for the specific time of day. This feature can be controlled through various means such as a switch, tap, or voice command.
