Biasanya, sistem ini berupa pencahayaan LED nirkabel dan bertegangan rendah yang dipasang langsung pada pintu garasi itu sendiri. Tujuan utama dari lampu pintu ini adalah untuk memberikan pencahayaan pada area garasi saat pintu terbuka, mengatasi masalah bayangan dan terhalangnya cahaya yang disebabkan oleh pintu. Sistem pencahayaan ini bekerja secara otomatis penuh, menyala dan mati secara otomatis ketika pintu garasi dibuka atau ditutup. Sistem ini beroperasi sebagai sistem colok dan pakai (plug and play) yang lengkap, sehingga tidak memerlukan kabel daya yang terhubung ke pintu saat bergerak maju mundur. Lampu pintu ini dirancang agar mudah dipasang menggunakan perangkat keras dan komponen yang disediakan.
