What is Emergency Battery Backup

Emergency battery backup refers to a feature commonly found in light fixtures that ensures continued operation during power outages or failures. When a building experiences a loss of regular power, fixtures equipped with this capability switch to emergency mode, utilizing backup batteries to provide illumination for key safety areas, escape routes, and safety equipment. These backup batteries are designed to power emergency lights, exit signs, or both, for a minimum duration of 90 minutes.

Emergency lights with battery backup are not only crucial for building safety but also necessary to comply with municipal codes and UL standards in North America. They are particularly required in private and commercial buildings, where battery-operated exit signs have been mandated for many years. These fixtures come in various options to suit different environments, including harsh or wet conditions.
