What is T12 Bulb

A T12 bulb is a type of fluorescent tube. The “T12” designation is based on the diameter of the bulb, which measures 1.5 inches. This makes T12 bulbs larger in diameter compared to T8 bulbs, which have a diameter of one inch. T12 bulbs are commonly used in commercial and industrial settings, such as office buildings, warehouses, and retail stores.

One important characteristic of T12 bulbs is their long life and high light output. They are known for providing bright illumination, making them suitable for applications where ample lighting is required. T12 bulbs are available in various color temperatures, including cool white, daylight white, and even specialized options like plant grow lights.

In terms of compatibility, T12 fixtures can be easily converted to use T8 LED tubes. This is because T12 fixtures typically have non-shunted tombstones, which are compatible with LED tubes. In contrast, T8 fixtures have shunted tombstones, which require replacement during the LED conversion process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are T8 Bulbs Being Discontinued

T5 and T8 fluorescent and compact fluorescent tubes are scheduled to be phased out. According to the European Commission’s ecodesign and RoHS directives, starting in 2023, these types of tubes will no longer be available.

What Are the Four Types of Fluorescent Lamp

Fluorescent lamps, also known as fluorescent tubes, are available in five main types: T2, T5, T5HO, T8, and T12. The “T” designation represents “tubular,” while the succeeding number indicates its diameter in 1/8-inch increments.

Is T12 Brighter Than T8

The T12 lamp produces 2,650 initial lumens per lamp, while the T8 produces 2,800 initial lumens per lamp, making it 6% brighter. However, it is important to note that the T12 lamp produces 2,300 design lumens, whereas the T8 produces 2,660 design lumens.
