What is Flat Lighting

Flat lighting refers to a style of illumination that produces minimal depth and contrast in a scene. It is commonly utilized in both photography and film/video. This technique involves the use of a single light source, which can be a point light or an area light, positioned anywhere within the scene. The resulting effect is a uniform distribution of light across each pixel in the image, resulting in a lack of variation in luminance throughout. While flat lighting is generally considered less desirable, there are specific contexts where it may be intentionally employed or unintentionally occur. In computer graphics, flat lighting is often employed to simulate natural sunlight and facilitate the creation of realistic-looking images.
